The Upper Usk South: landscape-scale nature recovery

The Upper Usk South: Integrated Catchment Management project is pioneering a landscape-scale approach to nature recovery across 8,000 hectares of the Upper Usk South area within Bannau Brycheiniog National Park. Designed to address the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss, this initiative brings together partners to deliver multi-objective, nature-based solutions that improve water quality, restore habitats, and enhance climate resilience across the catchment.

Working within the Usk Catchment Partnership, the project has identified priority areas for tree planting, heathland restoration, and species-rich grassland creation. The next phase will focus on developing advanced methods to measure how these interventions influence carbon storage, nutrient balance, and flood management — ensuring the right actions have the greatest possible impact.
