Sky-Sight Pine Marten Monitoring: Drone-Enabled Tracking & Thermal Detection

The Sky-Sight Project is pioneering a drone-enabled approach to support pine marten translocation and monitoring in the Lake District National Park. This first-of-its-kind UK pilot combines thermal imaging and radio-tracking drones to deliver unprecedented insight into pine marten movements, behaviour, and habitat use — far beyond the reach of traditional ground-based detection rates.

Pine martens are making a cautious return to England’s upland forests — a crucial step for restoring balance in woodland ecosystems. Monitoring their survival and spread is key to successful reintroduction. By using advanced drone technologies, this project provides high-resolution data that minimises disturbance to wildlife while enhancing our understanding of species recovery and coexistence with local communities.
