Invest in Peatland Recovery
Peatlands in the Peak District National Park and South Pennines are among the most degraded upland landscapes in Europe. In 2003, the Moors for the Future Partnership began as a National Lottery-funded project to restore these moors.
Over 20 years later, once barren peatlands are now covered in blanket bog, supporting unique wildlife such as mountain hares, curlews, and sphagnum moss. The Partnership has restored 250 square kilometers of peatland, but much work remains.
Peatlands are vital habitats, providing clean water, supporting biodiversity, reducing flooding and wildfires, and storing carbon. However, if left degraded, they become environmental hazards, releasing carbon and worsening flood risks.
Moors for the Future Partnership seeks funding to continue its successful peatland restoration programme, focusing on conservation, science, and public engagement.
