Ground Up Recovery

Invest in Sustainable Upland Farming

Ground Up is a collaborative project involving 12 upland farms and commons in the Orton Fells area of the Westmorland Dales within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Spanning 2,500 hectares, this landscape of national significance has been shaped by farming. The approach develops a sustainable blueprint for expanding nature-based solutions as direct payments are phased out, using a farm management tool.

Funding is crucial for modelling environmental and economic baselines, engaging with advisors, businesses, and stakeholders, and developing resilient farming practices for high-quality food production. Additionally, support is needed to explore multiple nature markets (Biodiversity Net Gain and carbon in woodland, soil, and grassland) and to deliver Natural Flood Management. The model is scalable, potentially involving more local farms or being replicated in other upland areas, enhancing its connectivity and impact as it links with the Coast to Coast National Trail.

Your support helps unlock:

  • Comprehensive environmental and economic modelling
  • Scalable natural flood management solutions
  • High-quality food production rooted in resilient practices
  • Access to and development of emerging nature markets — including Biodiversity Net Gain and carbon credits in woodland, soil, and grassland

Join us in backing a new generation of farming that delivers for nature, people, and profit.
