Expanding Temperate Rainforest: applied nucleation

Exmoor National Park has bold ambitions to re-establish and expand Britain’s temperate rainforests across the hyper-oceanic zone of central Exmoor. This visionary project will create a dynamic “rainforest mosaic” through an innovative approach known as applied nucleation — planting small, protected clusters of native trees and shrubs that naturally seed and spread to restore wider woodland cover.

Temperate rainforests are some of the UK’s most precious and carbon-rich habitats, providing sanctuary for lichens, mosses, birds, and invertebrates found nowhere else on Earth. By working with natural processes, this project will accelerate woodland regeneration, build landscape resilience, and bring life back to degraded habitats — creating a thriving rainforest network for generations to come.

A rocky stream flows next to a dirt path, surrounded by tall green trees and grass in bright daylight.

By investing in this initiative, partners will help to:

  • Accelerate natural woodland recovery across Exmoor’s upland valleys.
  • Restore rare rainforest ecosystems vital for carbon storage and biodiversity.
  • Build landscape resilience to climate change, flooding, and erosion.
  • Create a living model for large-scale, nature-led woodland expansion in the UK.

This is a rare opportunity for your business to help reawaken one of the UK’s most extraordinary ecosystems — supporting a flagship rainforest recovery project that will shape the future of nature restoration on Exmoor and beyond.
