Chapelfield Wetland

The Chapelfield Initiative is a pioneering, multi-stakeholder project designed to create a connected mosaic of wetland habitats across the Broads National Park. This wetland will work with natural processes to improve water quality, reduce flood risk, and restore vital wetland ecosystems.

Wetlands are nature’s lifeblood — filtering nutrients, storing carbon, and buffering communities from flooding. This project will establish an innovative model for water and land management that supports biodiversity, enhances resilience to climate change, and sustains local farm businesses through reliable water supply and regenerative practice.

A swallowtail butterfly feeds on a ragged robin flower - the largest and one of the rarest butterfly species in the UK. Swallowtails are often found in and around sedge and reedbeds, their larval food-plant (milk parsley) flourishes in areas where fens are carefully managed

By investing in this initiative, partners will help to:

  • Deliver nature-based solutions that improve water quality and support wildlife-rich wetland habitats.
  • Reduce flood risk and enhance natural floodplain function for nearby communities.
  • Create a model for sustainable agriculture by capturing and reusing high-flow water to support food production.
