Super Nature Reserve

Help Create a Resilient Network of Habitats

The creation of a new ‘super nature reserve’ will protect 1,290 hectares of vital wetland habitat to improve wetland habitats in and around Bassenthwaite Lake. This important initiative aims to create a resilient network of habitats, restore freshwater ecosystems, and improve water quality in the Lake District National Park. To achieve these goals, additional funding is crucial.

Key actions include:

  • Connecting watercourses and wetlands in the catchment with the floodplain
  • Restoring lakeshore habitats
  • Launching a Citizen Science Proragmme

The Citizen Science programme will bring together volunteers, professional scientists, and land managers to support evidence-led management of the Bassenthwaite Lake catchment area.

With adequate support, the project will benefit important breeding and wintering bird populations, as well as rarer species such as vendace and slender rush. It will enhance biodiversity through nature recovery, reduce flood risk, and improve water quality, while also providing greater opportunities for people to connect with nature.
