Help Fight a Major Threat to Nature
Japanese knotweed, Himalayan balsam, skunk cabbage and signal crayfish – names that breed fear into gardeners, homebuyers and conservationists alike. Like all National Parks and National Landscapes, Exmoor National Park’s conservation team have their work cut out protecting native plants and species from invasive plants and species so have developed a large-scale project worthy of the challenge.
The Exmoor Non-Native Invasive Species (ENNIS) Project is helping to control the spread of invasive non-native species on Exmoor through trialing innovative approaches and working with local communities and volunteers. It’s already proving successful but requires funding to continue and really get on top of the problem.
The total annual cost of invasive non-native species to the British economy is estimated at approximately £1.8 billion (although the real cost is expected to be higher) and is one of the five major threats to the state of nature; meaning this project is great for nature and people.
