Nature Connect

VodafoneThree and the UK’s National Parks partnership uses AI technology to help connect people with nature and protect it for the future.

In a landmark three-year partnership, Vodafone UK and National Parks are working together to harness AI and cutting-edge technology to support biodiversity, connect people with the natural world, and ensure the sustainability of the UK’s most treasured landscapes. The collaboration seeks to modernise conservation efforts while enhancing public engagement with nature.

In July 2026, Vodafone launched the creative ‘The Stick’ campaign, to encourage families everywhere to swap screen time for green time. The campaign came with a free digital ‘Stick-ionary’ guide, packed with ideas to inspire outdoor play and exploration.

Key Objectives

  • Enhance Conservation Efforts: Deploy AI-powered tools to collect and analyse biodiversity data at scale for effective habitat management and nature restoration.
  • Support Community Engagement: Connect underrepresented communities with nature through co-created programmes that promote health and inclusivity.
  • Increase Public Access: Reduce barriers preventing people from enjoying National Parks by creating inclusive, accessible resources and infrastructure.
  • Promote Sustainability and Climate Action: Align with Vodafone’s broader sustainability goals and contribute to the UK’s nature recovery and climate resilience agenda.

The Challenge

Despite the clear physical, mental, and emotional health benefits associated with spending time in nature, only 8%* of UK residents engage with it daily, and just 21%* feel strongly connected to it. Barriers such as time constraints, lack of companionship, and insufficient access persist. Meanwhile, environmental degradation and biodiversity loss continue across the UK’s protected landscapes, with habitat fragmentation and declining species posing urgent threats. National Parks face significant hurdles in accessing timely, high-quality data to inform conservation and management strategies.

The Solution

VodafoneThree’s partnership with the National Parks focuses on leveraging AI and mobile network technologies to transform nature conservation, improve access, and engage communities. The initiative includes three core projects in its first year:

  • AI Habitat Mapping: Deployed across all fifteen National Parks, this project uses AI and aerial photography to provide accurate, high-resolution habitat and biodiversity data. This will greatly enhance conservation planning and help meet national biodiversity targets.
  • Beautiful Boundaries (Eryri National Park): This restoration project will create or repair up to 4km of traditional hedgerows and drystone walls, boosting biodiversity, habitat connectivity, and cultural heritage while training local people in traditional skills.
  • Welcome to Nature (Northumberland National Park): A comprehensive community engagement programme aimed at underserved and diverse groups, focused on co-creation, accessibility, health and well-being, and inclusion through tailored projects, grants, and training.

The Impact

The partnership is already set to have a transformative impact on both conservation and community engagement:

  • Faster, Smarter Conservation: AI mapping dramatically reduces the time and cost of biodiversity surveys, enabling landscape-scale planning and better use of public funds.
  • Biodiversity Gains: Restoration of hedgerows and drystone walls in Eryri is expected to enhance ecological corridors, support species recovery, and strengthen natural carbon sinks.
  • Inclusive Nature Access: Over 20 community-driven projects and grant initiatives in Northumberland will empower diverse groups to engage with and protect their local environment.
  • Public Support and Business Leadership: Polling shows 78%* of people believe businesses have a role in protecting the environment—Vodafone’s leadership exemplifies this with real, tech-enabled solutions.

This pioneering partnership underscores how technology, community collaboration, and a shared commitment to sustainability can help secure a healthier, more connected future—for people and the planet.

Partner Perspectives

We all have a role to play in protecting nature for future generations. For more than 40 years, we’ve been connecting our customers to the people, places and things they love. As The Nation’s Network, this also includes our natural environment. This new partnership with the National Parks brings our technology together with on-the-ground initiatives to make a real impact. Importantly, our research not only shows that people want to engage more with nature, but that they expect businesses to play their part too, so we are proud to help meet that challenge.

It’s been a fantastic year [2025] partnering with National Parks Partnerships. Together, we’re showing how VodafoneThree can help protect the UK’s landscapes that people love. We’re excited to build on this momentum and deepen our impact in the years ahead.
Catherine Russell, Head of Sustainability and Social Impact, VodafoneThree
The outstanding beauty of our National Parks is unquestionable, but their value goes far beyond that. They play a vital role in restoring nature, supporting climate adaptation and driving jobs. Created to soothe a nation post-war, they continue to act as a ‘natural health service’ – supporting our wellbeing daily. Yet there are still barriers stopping some people spending time in nature – whether that’s confidence or simply knowing where to go. That’s why partnerships with organisations like Vodafone, are critical to help remove barriers and provide new tools and ideas that open up our National Parks to everyone – whilst protecting them for future generations.
